Correre in una città immersa in luci abbaglianti e accecanti, perdersi e ritrovarsi cercando la libertà, guidati da onde in cui riverberano sonorità anni Ottanta.
“Lights” è il nuovo singolo dei Matinée estratto da “Event Horizon”, l’ultimo disco della band pubblicato il 27 marzo 2020 per Neon Tetra Records.

Già supportata in Gran Bretagna da radio prestigiose come BBC Radio Wales e XS Manchester, la canzone è prodotta da Tony Doogan, eletto da Billboard come uno dei migliori producer in circolazione e già al lavoro con artisti del calibro di David Byrne, Mogwai, Libertines e Glasvegas. “Lights” è stato l’ultimo brano del disco a essere registrato in studio, ed è anche il primo passo in un mondo sonoro più synthwave e retrowave che la band italiana di base a Londra sta approfondendo e facendo sempre maggiormente suo.
Synth Anni Ottanta riproposti in chiave moderna e suonati da Chris Geddes dei Belle And Sebastian – ormai a tutti gli effetti un membro aggiunto della band – arpeggiano ed esplodono nel ritornello, affiancati da chitarre taglienti alla The Edge che affondano in un muro di tastiere e riverberi di voci.
Il brano racconta di una fuga in una città futuristica, dove a mantenere l’ordine non sono le persone o l’autorità ma luci che rendono i suoi abitanti ciechi, tentando di paralizzarli.
Atmosfere distopiche che, come spesso accade nei testi dei Matinée, evocano mondi paralleli, rifacendosi a quelli di George Orwell , Albert Camus o William Burroughs: realtà dove qualcosa è andato storto e la libertà non è più un bene assodato e scontato.

Definiti da Carl Barat dei Libertines come “la risposta italiana alla musica indie dei Naughties”, Matinée sono un quartetto composto da Luigi Tiberio (voce, chitarra, synth), Alfredo Ioannone (voce, basso), Giuseppe Cantoli (chitarra) e Alessio Palizzi (batteria) che oggi si divide tra Regno Unito e Italia. Il nome si ispira alla celebre canzone del primo disco dei Franz Ferdinand, band a cui i Matinée sono profondamente legati: la loro carriera è sbocciata anche grazie al sostegno alla band scozzese, che in passato li elesse a sua tribute band ufficiale e li scelse come gruppo d’apertura di alcune date italiane. “Event Horizon” è il loro secondo disco, uscito il 27 marzo 2020 per Neon Tetra Records a sei anni di distanza dal precedente “These Days”.
