Li avevamo visti l’anno scorso a Motel Mozaique, sotto il tendone esterno, e ci avevano impressionato. Molto meglio di nomi più altisonanti. Ora nell’ambito del progetto di promozione della musica olandese Dutch Impact li porta anche in due showcase in salsa nederlandese tenuti a due festival: al c/o pop festival and Reeperbahn festival (di cui, come già vi abbiamo detto, l’Olanda è proprio il focus country)
Abbiamo raggiunto via email i Rats on Rafts: quartetto olandese formatosi nel 2005, prendendo l’influenza da band new wave e post-punk come Echo & The Bunnymen, il Teardrop Explodes, e i connazionali The Ex. Il gruppo di base a Rotterdam è composto da David Fagan (voce, chitarra), Arnoud Verheul (chitarra), Florian Veenhuis (basso), e Joris Frowein (batteria).

1) Ho avuto la possibilità di vedere si vive l’anno scorso a Rotterdam al Motel Mozaique ed ero abbastanza impressionato. Finora l’atto più energico e crudo del festival. Come è per voi suonare dal vivo e come si fa avvicinare concerti e festival?
Ci piace molto suonare dal vivo, vivere e cercare di mettere ogni bit di energia che abbiamo in uno spettacolo, non importa se è in un pub di fronte a una piccola folla o in un grande festival, speriamo ci si avverta come un piacevole collisione con un veicolo in corsa.
2) A parte dal vivo, anche il vostro lavoro in studio è abbastanza impressionante. Ho letto che avete registrato tutto in analogico per il soffio del nastro e comunque ogni traccia sul disco presenta un suono sorprendente e piuttosto peculiare per conto suo. Come è la registrazione e il processo compositivo?
Il nostro obiettivo è di catturare l’energia di uno spettacolo dal vivo su nastro. Per esempio il B-side di Tape Hiss ha 4 brani tutti registrati in un momento e questo è il modo in cui li avremmo suonati dal vivo in quel momento.
3) Avete pubblicato 2 album finora (beh, demo / EP non incluso). C’è una possibilità di un prossimo album? Se sì: come ci state lavorando su… e se suona un po ‘diverso.
Lo scorso gennaio abbiamo registrato un album con un altro gruppo olandese chiamato de Kift. L’album si compone di canzoni esistenti di De Kift e RoR rielaborate e miscelati insieme per creare qualcosa di nuovo. Loro sono stati in giro per 28 anni e hanno collegamenti con la prima generazione olandese di punks, che ci ha spinto un sacco quando abbiamo iniziato. Abbiamo un suono completamente diverso rispetto a quello di de Kift. Per esempio, cantano in olandese, quasi mai usano riverberi, ritardi o altri effetti e hanno una sezione di ottoni, in modo che il contrasto rende il suono interessante per me. Il disco sarà pubblicato con Fire Records il 14 ottobr .
Nel frattempo stiamo scrivendo e lavorando su nuovo materiale che sta lentamente iniziando a far parte quindi del nostro repertorio, rimpiazzando la roba vecchia.
o forse adesso avete nuove ispirazioni rispetto a prima (scusate: formulare questa domanda viene malissimo quando non si è faccia a faccia!)
Stiamo sempre ascoltando nuova musica, e siamo sempre alla ricerca di qualcosa che può davvero esaltarsi, se è vecchio o nuovo non si sa mai se lo farà diventare qualcosa che si può ascoltare nella nostra musica. Al momento uno dei nostri preferiti è Moondog.
4) Come avete formato la band? Avete degli aneddoti speciali da raccontarci, o anche cosa significhi venire da Rotterdam?
Abbiamo formato il gruppo a scuola, era sempre stata una cosa che volevo fare e non avevo provato prima, ma non sono riuscito a trovare il giusto gruppo di persone per farlo. In quel periodo nessuno di noi era in grado di suonare, ma tutti noi apprezzavamo lo stesso tipo di musica sicché poi abbiamo imparato a suonare facendolo assieme. Credo che non ci si aspetti nulla da te se si proviene da Rotterdam.
5) Sarete ai Dutch Impact Showcase i in un paio di festival. Quali sono i tuoi le aspettative e come è essere un musicista della scena olandese?
L’Olanda è un piccolo paese, una volta che uno è stato su e giù per il paese un paio di volte ci si rende conto che si vive in un villaggio e per quanto vi piace un drink al vostro locale, è necessario allontanarsi prima che sia troppo tardi!
1) I had the chance to see you live last year in Rotterdam at Motel Mozaique and I was pretty impressed. So far the most energetic and raw act of the festival. How is for you playing live and how do you approach gigs and festivals?
We really enjoy playing live and try to put every bit of energy we have into a show, does not matter if it’s in a pub in front a small crowd or at a big festival, we hope it feels like a pleasant collision with a speeding vehicle.
2) Aside live, even your studio work is pretty awesome. I read that you recorded everything in analog for Tape Hiss and anyway every track on the record sound amazing and pretty peculiar on its own. How is your recording and composing process?
We aim to catch the energy of a live show on tape. For instance the B- Side of Tape Hiss has 4 songs all recorded in one go cause that’s the way we played them live at the time.
3) You released 2 albums so far (well, demos/ep not included). Any chance of an upcoming album? If yes: how is working on it… and if it sounds a bit different or you
Last January we recorded an album with another Dutch band called de Kift. It consists of existing songs by De Kift and RoR reworked and blended together to create something new. They have been around for 28 years and all have connections with the first Dutch generation of Punks, which inspired us a lot when we started. We have an entirely different sound than that of de Kift. For instance, they sing in Dutch, hardly ever use reverbs, delays or other effects and have a Brass section, so the contrast makes it sound interesting to me. We will be releasing it with Fire Records on October the 14 th .
In the meantime we are writing and working on new stuff that’s slowly starting to get into our set list and pushing the old stuff over board.
have now maybe new inspirations compared to before (sorry: that’s a terrible question when not face to face!)
We are always listening to new music, and always searching for something that can really excite us, whether it’s old or new you never know if it will become something you can hear in our music. At the moment one of our favourites is Moondog.
4) How did you form the band? Are there any special things to tell us about the forming or being a band from Rotterdam?
We formed the group in school, it was always something I wanted to do and tried before but I was unable to find the right people. At that stage none of us could play but we all liked the same music so we kind of learned to play together. I guess nothing was expected of you if you came from Rotterdam.
5) You will be at Dutch impact showcases in a couple of festivals. What are your expectations and how is being a musician in the dutch scene?
Holland is a small country, once you’ve been up and down the country a few times you realise you live in a village and as much as you enjoy a drink at your local, you have to get away from it before it’s too late!
